A design system that multiplied output

Three applications in under six months, with one front-end engineer. Outsourced apps had been costing more than £10,000 each.

What an outsourced app had cost

Vu.City wanted payments, tools, and streaming on the web. One strong front-end developer was the bottleneck, so other teams either improvised or hired an agency. The agency work was late, expensive, and did not fit the rest of the product.

The problem

Web apps were built by people outside their specialty, or by agencies that delivered standalone sites. The public experience was slow and inconsistent.

What we did

Web, UX, and application developers agreed a single design system. We turned it into a React component library and a boilerplate app.

Any developer could assemble an accessible interface from those components, and a pipeline could deploy a new experience without a separate front-end project.

What changed

Three applications shipped in under six months with the one front-end engineer already on staff. At least two of them would previously have gone to an agency, at more than £10,000 each.

The component library can grow without waiting on each application, and the other way around.
